What Causes Chest Discomfort After Alcohol Consumption?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015
Question: Recently about 3 months ago, I had a binge drinking night after eating hot wings. I woke up the following morning to chest discomfort. Two days later i went to ER as it did not dissipate. I had blood work chest x-ray and ekg done to ensure my heart was ok. They said it wss Acid Reflux abd prescrived me pepcid 20 mg and asked i follow up with my GP. I was in the process of moving so i could not see a GP at the time. I read that i should raise my upper body to help reflux so since i was moving i was on my parents couch snd propped myself up accordingly. I started having soreness in my left shoulder and mild numbness in left arm and some upper back pain around left shoulder blade and spine and continued chest discomfort. I also have a slight tight feeling in throat area near XXXXXXX apple. I finally saw a GP who told me it he did not think it was heart related and that it was most likely attributed to GERD and compressed nerve in neck. He prescribed me 40 mg Omeprazole. Ive been on it one month with slight relief but i still get heartburn and burp to relieve pressure at some point everday. Most of the time it is just belching though only once or twice a day do I get any chest discomfort.

I will add after the ER visit i still had 3 or 4 nights of quite a bit of alcohol (beer). I was 205 lbs during the first incident. I quit drinking cokes and alcohol after i moved and changed my diet significantly which was ~3 weeks after the ER. I got worried because i lost 20 pounds in about 6 weeks time but ive plateaued at 186 for the past 2-3 weeks. Im extremely worried about esophageal cancer and I knoe it cant be determined unless a proper test is done but my GP didnt seemed too concerned. I just wanted to know how concerned should i be and if i should be needing a test done right now or what.

Brief Answer:
Esophageal cancer less likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Your symptoms are due to GERD and the risk factors that caused GERD are alcohol intake and obesity.
Esophageal cancer is less likely since you do not have symptoms suggestive of esophageal cancer like difficulty in swallowing.
The weight loss could be due to change in diet and inadequate calories.
If you are still apprehensive, you can get an upper GI endoscopy done which will show whether you have esophageal cancer or not.
I hope that answers your question.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.

Thank you for your response! I just wanted to add/ask an additional thing. So when this all first started i stressed daily about it being heart related, plus i had s HUGE move away from home family snd friends for my new job and not even a month ago one of my good friends passed away from her cancer battle.

I know these don't rule out cancer or anythig but thr stess and anxiety i have had has been at an all time high for my lifetime. Could these factors be a role in my reflux symptoms?
