What Are The Chances Of HIV Transmission After Protected Intercourse?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Mar 2015
Question: 6 weeks ago, I received a fellatio from a massage parlor worker with a condom. I don't believe there was any skin to skin, but she could have put it on with her mouth. She did not have any symptoms that I could see around her mouth. I shaved to the skin all around my genitals the day prior. THe whole thing lasted less than a minute. The following weekend, I went to visit family and had forgotten any changes of clothes so I wore the same underwear for 4 days straight and had ran a few miles in them on friday before I left. By that Sunday, there was definitely some heat coming from my genitals, so I put some after shave lotion on there, which seemed to make it worse. I put Cortizone cream on there and have been feeling better since. I was also tested for all STDs (including HSV1 & 2) which came back negative and was diagnosed with folliculitis and given Bactroban. Which I also had loss of appetite and nervousness, hard time sleeping at night. That was two weeks ago and now I think my nerves are getting to me as I have a fiance and I don't know if the things I feel are actually something or in my head. I did have a random muscle spasm like feeling that would occur in the tip of my penis, but no discharge and would random feel discomfort, but would not itch in the tip. It did not burn when I urinated. That feeling has since gone away so I am thinking it was just my anxiety. I went and saw my doctor today and received anxiety and depression medication, but after leaving there, he has me worried sick about HIV. I went there to confirm that I can't have herpes and now he has me worried about a whole other virus. Any help would be much appreciated!

Brief Answer:
The risk of transmission of HIV or any other STD is almost negligible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your deep concern for the possibility of HIV and other of STDs after the oral sex.

After analyzing the complete query with best diligence let me reassure you fully that the risk of transmission of HIV or any other STD is almost negligible. There are certain medical reasons for the same:

- Your fellatio part was protected with condom. So you can relax from the part of protected fellatio and there are nil chance in such a case.

- For the HIV infection after oral sex(Fellatio if unprotected too)- it is not seen practically that there can be any chance to get the infection by oral sex(Fellatio). Medically HIV virus can not spread by oral sex in either case from male to female or female to male. There are least of chances only when both the partners have blood discharge from a cut wound that get mixed in adequate amount. In mouth there are certain enzymes which makes the HIV virus inactivated.

Further, your whole incidence lasted for less than one minute which is not an adequate of the time to acquire any of the other infection and that too with protection by condom.

So relax for the part of oral sex(Fellatio) and getting HIV infection because of simple medical reason given above. In my clinical experience also I have never seen any case of HIV infection after oral sex(Fellatio).

For the part of the symptoms you are feeling are just due to anxiety and nothing else. In HIV there is high grade fever with severe flu like symptoms. Just check your temperature it must be below 100. In HIV the temperature is never below 101 Fahrenheit. The rest of the symptoms are also non specific, so allay all your fears and relax.

I hope these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

Thank you so much for your very detailed response! I guess I just got worried because I thought that I've read cases in which oral sex HIV transmission was a possibility. I have not broken over a 98.6 temp since exposure. Not to mention I have been around people that have been sick. The only other sexual encounter since then was a hand job which also lasted about a minute. I've read that the final conclusion can be done at 3 months post exposure. It's been about half of that with nothing yet. Not to mention I don't think HIV is a very common disease to begin with.

Brief Answer:
These symptoms are basically due to anxiety and nothing else.

Detailed Answer:
Dear young fellow,

Welcome back and thanks a lot for your swift follow up.

I am happy that you understood the simple facts regarding your query. I quite very often counsel your kind of cases where the person is worried about one or the other STDs and particularity to HIV.

One of the most important thing is that young fellow like you first read the symptoms on internet and then start perceiving one or the symptoms frequently. The most important of all the features is fever of high grade to differentiate the symptoms of anxiety from HIV.

In your case too I am quite confident that all of these symptoms are basically due to anxiety and nothing else. An additional reassuring feature is that along with all the facts provided above, in years of my clinical practice I have never seen any case of HIV by oral contact or by hand job.

Still if you are worried then there is latest of the test with RNA PCR which detects the presence of virus after 2 weeks of exposure. There is no need to wait for 3 months and getting anxious one time or other. In my experience this test would be negative and therefore will give you ease of mind.

So just relax and don't worry about anything related to HIV.

I hope these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

The last thing I'm wondering about is the risk of contracting anything from a hand job. I received a hand job a couple of days ago at a massage place.

Answered by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kanodia (38 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Hand job is same like we routinely touch each other or shake hands.

Detailed Answer:
Dear young buddy,

For the part of hand job and contracting any STDs from same: It is practically not possible to get any of the STDs from the same. It is because of the fact that hand job is same like we routinely touch each other or shake hands or get in routine contact with each other. If STDs could spread so easily then most of the people would have had one or the other STDs !!!

So young guy, do not worry about anything. But this doesn't say that you should not use a protection. One must use a protection in form of condoms. STDs spreads only when there is exchange of fluids or blood form one person to other with open wounds or cuts or any ulcers. In hand job case there is rare possibility of the same. SO do not worry about the same.

I hope this information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

That makes complete sense!! I guess my only real worry about that situation is her giving another fellow who possibly had herpes and then touching me because I have no idea if she cleaned herself up or not.

Brief Answer:
STDs spreads only when there is exchange of fluids or blood.

Detailed Answer:
Dear young buddy,

I can very well understand your great concern. If there are 50% chances that you got hand job after herpes infected person then there are equal chances of not having the same !!!

But even if we consider that you got hand job after an herpes infected person then also the chances are negligible. It is because of the fact provided above that STDs spreads only when there is exchange of fluids or blood from one person to other with open wounds or cuts or any ulcers.

In your case I could not find any history of cuts or wounds on penile site. SO the chances of contracting any STDs is nil. Additionally, massage people are more vigilant than yourself to not have any such kind cuts or wounds on penile site. So just do not worry about this hypothetical situation and get ahead with your normal life.

I hope this information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

Now is that because the virus dies, in a sense, when it is not immediately in skin to skin contact? In example she touches a penis with the virus and then later touches me, but it wasn't immediate so the virus is then dead.

Brief Answer:
Viruses are dead once these comes in contact with air.

Detailed Answer:
Dear young buddy,

Welcome back and thanks for your further follow up.

Regarding the present query: you are correct in your knowledge that viruses are dead once these comes in contact with air.

Even if we think that there are live viruses remaining immediately after contact with herpes infected person then also there requires a cut or ulcer for the entry of the virus.

So getting through your information, there is no such cut or abrasion in yourself which makes practically impossible to get any infection.

I hope this information will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

Thank you! This will be my final question and then I will close and rat . Just for affirmation. You're saying that she could touch her sore or another sore and then touch me without cleaning up and I still wouldn't get it because it is dead. Correct?
