Suggest Treatment For Urinary Retention

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Nov 2014
Question: last Thursday I could not empty my bladder more then just dribbling some. I went to hospital the+y scanned my bladder and said i had retention 400 + ml. Nurse catheterized me and DR. had her put in a Foley catheter for five days plus gave me cipro and told me to double up on my Flomax for 5 days. Had urine culture that was negative. Dr . Said it probably was a affect from the radiation teatments I had for Prostate Cancer PSA now .01
I had been having a less forceful stream and pain when urinating for a long while. But could still able to go good. Then suddenly I could only dribble. Then I sought help. This has never happen before. DR said if after 5 days it was not better be would scope me. I go back tomorrow to have catheter removed and see what happens. This has me worried. I am hopping it will go back to being able to urinate without any furter trouble ,but feel I should have scope exam. What is your take. This came on sudden a few hours before that day I was urinating OK

Brief Answer:
All depends on the results tomorrow!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what you experienced. It is definitely hard for you. I pray it all settles tomorrow. Radiation causes scarring of tissues that receive radiation. This is most likely what has happened with the urethra especially the section next to the prostate that has resulted in stenosis(blockage) and urinary retention.

After removal tomorrow, we would be able to tell whether this is over or not. If it is not, the scope and dilation of the urethra should be able to provide more helpful options.

Stay calm and relaxed. How much you worry about this would not change the course tomorrow. Let's see what lies ahead and address accordingly. You can be rest assured that you would never walk alone until we get a suitable solution for this.

I hope that this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Brief Answer:
It is all psychological and would fade over time!

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

It is but normal that you still have this feeling. It is because the brain is still to adapt and it all requires time for all to settle. Bother not about this at this time.

How did it go today with the doctor's visit?

I wish you well.

Thank You for your answer. I went and had catheter removed and they said I passed the Pee test.Urine Stream was much better. I am just hoping it stays that way. My Dr has me taking Flomax twice daily now. I am still anxious about it happening again . I am going to make a appointment to have the scope test just to make everything is good. Thanks gain DR. Should I drink a good amount of water to keep things flowing?

Brief Answer:
A scope would not be very useful!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

A scope would not be too useful to address this problem. How well you can pass out urine matters most. A scope would say it is okay now and a scope cannot fix this problem. I rather suggest you stay calm.

Drinking enough water would help increase urine flow and reduce the chances of a possible block from debris. It would be a good habit.

I wish you well and am very happy to address any further concerns that you may have.
