Suggest Treatment For Severe Heartburn With Belching And Abdominal Bloating

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: About 3 months ago I started having this really painful heartburn with belching, bloating. I have a history of GERD and also got treated for H-Pylori about 8 years ago. But since then I have been watching my diet and I would rarely have heartburn. But for the last three months it is not going away.
Before I started having heartburn, my palms and under my feet started itching. Then about 1.5 month ago I started having hives and bumps on my fingers, back, legs and arms. They are a little itchy, kind of like bee stings that come at night but they usually disappear during the they. I know it's not a bed bug or anything like that.
I went to several doctors, got treated for H-Pylori again, took a lot of anti-acids, proton pump inhibitors, allergy medicine, but nothing seems to be helping. Since last week I stopped taking medication, and I am drinking only herbal teas and eating a little. My heartburn is a little better now, but I am still having these hives.
Also, I have history of high-cholesterol of around 300. Two months ago I had full blood test done. Blood sugar, liver enzymes everything except cholesterol was normal.
Can these hearthburns, hives, itching of hands and feet be somehow related?

Brief Answer:
Better to get done allergy testing.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
No, I don't think your heart burn, hives and itching of palms and soles are connected.
In my opinion, you should definitely get done allergy testing to identify the causative allergen because your hives and itching are mostly due to allergy.
Also get done vitamin B12 level to rule out its deficiency because thus can also cause similar symptoms.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone vitamin B12 level?
2. Are you taking any drug for high cholesterol?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

1. A couple of years ago my primary care physician told me I have B12 deficiency. She prescribed B12 vitamins. But last year I had it checked again with another dr, they said it was normal. Should I have it checked again?

2. I was on statins like lipitor, simvastatin on and off for almost 15 years. I don't take them regularly. But last year when I started again my liver enzymes went up so the dr told me to stop, it was at that time I also started having pain in my fingers, kind of like arthritis pain. So, I stopped taking cholesterol medication thinking it was causing that joint pain.

What kind of allergy test should I have, any recommendation?

Thanks,

1. I am not vegetarian. I eat meat, chicken and I eat fish at least every two weeks.
2. I am not taking any vitamins. Last year I tried several multi-vitamins, but they always make me sick causing nausea. So, I never take vitamins.

Thanks.

No need to repeat vitamin B12 level.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Since you eat non vegetarian food, no need to test for repeat vitamin B12 level.
About allergy testing, there are two kinds of allergy testing.
1. Indirect allergy testing in this eosinophil count and serum IgE level should be checked. Both of these can rise in allergy.
2. Direct allergy testing.
So please let me know
1. Have you ever undergone eosinophil count?
2. Have you ever undergone serum IgE level?

I read somewhere that anti-acid medication might cause vitamin deficiencies because of low stomach acids. When I was taking Nexium maybe I didn't get enough B12. I will have a B12 test done anyway, just to rule it out.

1. No, I haven't done eosinophil count
2. No, I haven't done serum IgE level

I will visit a healthcare center today. What should I tell them to have these tests done?

Thanks,

Yes, you are right about antacid use and vitamin B12 deficiency.

Yes, you are right about antacid use and vitamin B12 deficiency.
But possibility of vitamin B12 deficiency is less because you are taking non vegetarian food regularly.
But better to get it done.
You need to go to laboratory and ask for eosinophil count and serum IgE level.
Please let me know
1. Where do you live?
2. Will you be able to get it done by your self or you first have to consult your local doctor and then laboratory?
3. Have you ever consulted allergy specialist?

1. I live in XXXXXXX IL a suburb of XXXXXXX

2. I don't have insurance. There is a walk-in clinic nearby. I will go there and tell them about my health problems and tell them that I was advised to have these tests done.

3. No, I haven't consulted an allergy specialist. But I got an appointment from a chiropractor in XXXXXXX next Saturday, who also has specialty in Food Allergies. I though what I have might be related to food allergies, that's why I got an appointment from him.

for the last 3 months I went to 3 doctors, 2 family doctors, Gastroenterology specialist. Gastroenterology doctor told me we have to have endoscopy and some other tests done because of the excessive heartburn I am having and didn't say anything about the hives or if they are related to the stomach problem I am having. Family doctor thought it might be ringworm gave me a lot of cream for that, but that didn't help at all, so I stopped using the cream.

Thanks,
