Suggest Treatment For Severe Fever, Stomach Ache And Loose Motions

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Hi,

My nephew has got sever fever for last 4 days. It is intermittent.
On first two days fever was upto 103 and it used to get relieved when we do sponging.
He also complains about stomachache, legache, headache while fever is there and it goes off after 1 hour or so, when temperature goes back to 98 approx.
It used to reoccur in next two hours.

Doctor identified that to be a viral fever and few medicines were suggested with suspect of swine flue as well.
I have attached the prescription alongwith.

Probably because of medicines, the fever now reoccurs after 6 hours approx.
Today evening he started shivering and had loose motion as well and fever went up to 103.

Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Yes, this is most likely a virus.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

I can understand the pain your family is going through as your nephew continues to be sick. Thank you for posing this question on HCM.

After looking at the entire question and the attached list of medications that your nephew is receiving, I am inclined to agree with the treating doctor's diagnosis of this being viral fever. However, as he is not better even after 4 days, you should take him back to the same doctor and request him to run a few blood tests on the child. This should include a complete blood count, a platelet count, a test for dengue fever, a throat and nose swab for swine flu, and a X-ray of his chest. Also, it would be useful to check his urine as well.

In the meantime, I think you should stop using Meftal completely and give only paracetamol (Calpol) 4-5 times a day, along with sponging of the whole body with tap water as and when the temperature in his armpit climbs above 100 degree F or 38 degree C. Azee and Tamiflu must be continued. Mucaine gel is just a stomach soother, and is not needed unless your child has a stomach upset or a lot of vomiting. In fact, Mucaine may increase his motions, so you might want to ask his doctor if it needs to be continued. In my opinion, it can be stopped.

Revert back once his condition changes, or if you have more questions to ask. I will be happy to reply.

Take care, and may your nephew return to the pink of health within as short time as possible.

Dr. Taher.
