Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I am very overweight and have had blister like sores on my legs for many years. I do see a doctor anually and he didn't seem too concerned about the issue when he checks this out. recently these "blisters" have been oozing from time to time. Why?

Brief Answer:
a picture of blisters is needed. ..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

1. Can you please provide a picture of the blisters on your leg? I need to know their exact location and appearance to give a final diagnosis.

2. You are saying that recently they' ve been oozing. Is it a pus like or a clear fluid?

From what you are describing, it seems that the blisters are due to friction (taking into account you being overweight )

However, knowing the exact location and the photo will help me with further and more specific opinion.

The blisters look very much like blisters thus why I described them as such and they are located on the front of both legs between the ankle and the knee. The liquid oozing from them is clear. It might be noted that this oozing only happens occasionally and last for about a day and then stops. I am not sure about the friction as I wear loose fitting dresses (no pants or hose that might cause friction).

Brief Answer:
Deep vein thrombosis, diabetes, fungal infection to further evaluate. ..

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

Thank you for providing additional details.

From what you are describing, it seems that the blisters are due to dermatitis (eczema ).
The most important thing is to rule out poor circulation of blood on your legs. A doppler ultrasound of blood vessels in the legs is advised to further evaluate them and rule out deep vein thrombosis.

A skin scrapping examination is advised to rule out infectious causes (fungus).

Blood sugar levels should be controlled to rule out diabetes.

If everything is ok, then it is eczema.

As they are located in front part of the legs between knee and ankle, friction is not a cause.

Keep good local hygiene. If itchy, please apply cortisone cream locally. If infected, antibiotic ointment is recommended. But first, should rule out the above mentioned causes.

All the best!
