Question: My 25 year old daughter has a temperature of 104.3. She saw a doctor today and was told she has a kidney infection. The doctor prescribed her Ciprofloxacin HCL 500mg twice a day & Prochlorperazine 10 mg every 6 hours. She has an appt. with him tomorrow morning, we were hoping to treat her as an outpatient, but I am worried about the fever. Do I need to take her to the ER?

Brief Answer:
Give her medication for fever

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Yes,you are right fever is high grade. I hope your doctor has given medications for fever along the drugs that you have mentioned.

If not, give her medication for fever that you have. Paracetamol (tylenol) available over the counter is a very good fever controlling drug. You can try it alternatively.

Along with this:
ask her to take rest
take light diet
plenty of fluids
You can do cold sponging if fever does not respond.

Is spite of above measures still if fever does not goes down talk to your doctor.

In any infection antibiotics take typically 2 to 2.5 days to respond. You can judge the response to the treatment by decrease intensity of fever or increase duration between fever spikes.

I hope this helps.

Wishing her speedy recovery.

Regards,

Dr.Pragnesh
