Does Mother Suffer Hydronephrosis If The Fetus Has One?

Hi, I am 21 weeks pregnant and at our scan on Monday we found out our baby has moderate hydronephrosis. I have a history of UTIs and kidney infections and I have felt for the past couple of weeks that I have an infection as I have kidney pain (or at least right hand pain around my groing and back, which also feels worse in the groin as I empty my bladder) although regular urine tests at midwife/doctor appointments have not shown any indication of an infection. I am wondering whether it would be sheer coincidence for me also to be experiencing hydronephrosis (if these symptoms could indicate this as a possibility) or whether the condition could be genetic. Thank you

Hi,

Hydronephrosis in fetus, is very common. 5% 0f total pregnancies are diagnosed with this condition on ultrasonography. This simply denotes, that there may not be proper clearance of urine from the kidney to the ureter in fetus, resulting in increase in size of the pelvis (The lower portion of kidney, where the urine collects before draining into the ureter) of kidney.

About 65-95 % of cases presenting with fetal hydronephrosis, become normal immediately after birth or after some time of birth of their own and result in no further symptom of hydronephrosis. In a very few cases, further analysis of etiology and treatment accordingly is required. Per say, your condition of UTI has nothing to do with the presence of hydronephrosis in your unborn child.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
