Question: Yes dr. Bienenfeld. I am a sixty eight year old married lady named XXXXXXX S., and I have been treated for a diagnosis of bipolar II since I was a sophomore in college. I Have always had a great deal of anxiety always. I did have physical ,emotional abuse in growing up as well as in my first marriage. I managed to teach art one year and had something like amnesia for 8 weeks until my memory came back. This also happened as a medical secretary at wash. U Med school here. I get terrified at times and have frequent anxiety attacks as well as some not so frequent paqnic attacks. I have a bfa and two good secretarial degrees where I had to study very diligently. I have always had social anxiety. What is the def. of aan aanxiety disorder, because I think I have an undiagnosed one. I take 3 1 mg Xanax which is alprazalom and 3 100mg seeroquell , the generic, so what is a anxiety disorder definition, dr? Also, I have great difficulty sleeping at night. I am frightened of going to sleep often, because I can not sleep, so I conter- obsess by chanting the lords prayer if able or God, I say Help me to God and sometimes I do it all night. My son and I are close as well as my brother A. I am blessed with 3 very good friends from high school who I share as close friends who are not ill like me. I see a good psychiatrist and also a very good counselor. Thank you so much. My e-mail is YYYY@YYYY

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns.

First of all, I would like to state that I choose to answer this question because Dr. Bienenfeld is not in our panel. I felt responsible to answer this query.

I understand that you were treated for Bi-polar II. You are anxious always. Suffered physical and mental abuse. Suffered from amnesia for 8 weeks. Panic attacks, social anxiety and anxiety are frequent. Freighted to go to sleep. You are consulting a good psychiatrist and a good counselor. You take xanax and Seroquel. You are good at studies, coursework. Blessed with three good friends.

Nice of you. Seroquel is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Xanax is a medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Therefore your panic attack, anxiety and schizophrenia psychoses related complains are addressed very well. Your psychiatrist is very much able (as you state) to treat you professionally. I too did not have any doubt about it.

Instead of me explaining what is anxiety to you, please go through the information available in this website. http://www.adaa.org/understanding-anxiety. I am providing you this website because, anxiety and panic attacks are supposed to be known in depth by the patient. http://www.adaa.org/understanding-anxiety. Such an awareness makes the management easier. You will find the relationship between bi-polar disorder and anxiety. Go through the whole website and learn everything regarding these. That will help you manage your problem. You will learn that you are The Anxious Bipolar Patient.

Your counselor is supposed to be also a psychotherapist. Many researches and researchers confirm that medicines alone cannot cure mental disorders. Exercise, Life style changes, change in thinking pattern, relaxation etc are as essential as medicines. Psychotherapy can help you changing your lifestyle and thinking patterns. Yoga and meditation help you to streamline your metabolism and neurological balance.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy which helps in streamlining your thoughts, behavior patterns and negative emotional outbursts are primarily used worldwide alongwith medication world wide.

Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy, Play therapy or game therapy for adults, helps you to keep yourself fit and fresh. Also helps you to find a sleep rhythm.

Vocational Therapy helps you in the vocational area to manage the disease induced problems.

Relaxation Techniques. These techniques may help people develop the ability to cope more effectively with the stresses that contribute to anxiety and mood, as well as with any associated physical symptoms. Breathing re-training, progressive muscle relaxation, and exercise are among the techniques.

These therapies together and with the help of your friends and near people, you can have a dramatic positive turn around from your current condition. Hope your counselor have given you enough information and a knowledge about these therapies. I come to the scene if your counselor is not up to the above mark.

In that case and if you desire so, I would like to help you. These therapies are individual specific and I will be needing more of your information so that I formulate methods to you. Please be as detailed as possible.

1. Regarding your Bi-polar disorder, what is your frequency of your high - and - low - mood swings (Rather manic stage and depression stage frequency) ?
