Suggest Remedies For Severe Hair Loss
Question: Hi Doctor,
This is about hair fall.
My wife xxxx XXXXXXX (28 yrs old) has gone through multiple surgery for ano-fistual in the past. Last surgery was performed in the month of August, 2017. Not sure if that is the reason behind hair fall.
Symptoms :
1. Hair fall.
2. Dry scalp.
3. Excess Dandruff.
4. Itching in scalp.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us.
I am Dr. Kakkar (Dermatologist). I have noted your concern.
Previous surgery is definitely a reason for increased hair shedding - Telogen effluvium. The stress of surgery on body reserves induces transition of hair follicle from growing phase (Anagen) to shedding phase (Telogen) and that hair is eventually shed (Effluvium). This stress on hair follicles is mediate by certain chemicals, chiefly TGF Beta.
Besides that dandruff or Seborrheic dermatitis is another common cause of increased hair shedding and scalp itching. For her dandruff I suggest that she uses an anti dandruff shampoo every alternate days e.g a ketoconazole and ZPTO based shampoo (Nizral shampoo is an OTC anti dandruff shampoo) or Selenium sulphide shampoo (Selsun shampoo). In addition to this, for excessive dandruff in my patients I also usually recommend a topical steroid lotion for overnight scalp application e.g mometasone furoate 0.1% lotion Or clobetasol propionate 0.05% lotion for 2- 4 weeks. She must take a diet rich in proteins and adequate in carbohydrates, nutrients and vitamins. Besides I suggest an oral biotin supplement and an iron supplement for her hair fall.
