Is Blood Sugar Level Of 300-500 A Cause For Concern?
Question: Hi! I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Going on my 3rd yr with this disease. I also have asthma & copd. For over a week now I have been sick with an upper respiratory infection. My blood sugar for about 2-3 weeks now have been 300-500. They changed my metformin to another drug that is mixed in with the metformin. I have excessive thirst,frequent Urination,nausea,dehydration,headaches,moodiness,unclear thinking, unbalanced. Have been to ER 3x's in the past 5 days. Dr gave me an IV and 15 mg of albutirol. When do i need to start worrying about my blood sugar.

Blood sugar levels of 300 to 500 along with these symptoms, its self are the signs to worry.
In such case I may have suggested following investigations which should be done on emergency basis.
- Complete Blood Count.
- Renal Function Test - Urea, creatinine, electrolytes.
- Random Blood sugar Level.
- Arterial Blood Gas.
- Urine examination including urine ketones.
- Chest xray.
Depending up on detailed clinical examination and above test there may be need for hospitalization and Intravenous insulin and antibiotics.

X-rays EKG was all ok. Blood work im not sure. Went to Er yesterday with sore throat & a really thick white tongue with white bumps all over it. Dr noticed it right off. Throat felt like it was swollen shut. Hard to swallow & since im Continuously thirsty I really notice it. Its starting to feel that way again. Its so sore right now. Im going to the bathroom every 20 mins. Also have diarrhea. Thank u for your quick response. I know its serious just can't seem to make the Dr s think so.

Due to high blood sugar level body tries to flush sugar out of body through urine. Along with sugar water also get flushed out of body which leads to frequent urination, dry mouth, abnormal thirst, dehydration.
Also due to high blood sugar there might be possibility of oro-pharyngeal candidiasis (fungal infection) that might be the reason for your throat symptoms.
Rapid control of blood sugar level with use of insulin along with candid mouth paint may help.
You should consult your diabetologist / endocrinologist for same.
