Is A Colonoscopy Necessary While Treating Difficulty In Defecation And Hard Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: Hello. My doctor asked me to do a colonscopy to find the reason for my bleeding sometimes. Every 3-4 months sometimes when my stool is very hard I have hard time passing the stool. During those times I bleed during bowel movement for a few days and then it becomes ok and no more bleeding.

Now I aam getting really nervous about the colonscopy since i read online that it can have various side effects not to mention if I have any hemorroids, polyp or something like that it may worsen my condition. Can you please tell me if this is true or is it necessary for a person in my situation to get a colonscopy?
Or is there any alternatives?

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM). Most important and common cause of painless bleed per rectum especially when one is constipated and at your age and which resolve spontaneously is hemorrhoids. So you may try treatment for hemorrhoids if bleeding continues then undergo colonoscopy examination to identify the cause of bleeding. However its wrong to think that colonoscopy may worsen the condition. You may also undergo limited examination like sigmoidoscopy which examines only anal canal, rectum and sigmoid colon which are the distal part of the colon. Also when the blood is fresh, most of the times it menas the bleeding is from distal part only so sigmoidoscopy examination can be an alternative.
I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.

Thanks for the answer.

If it is a internal hemorroids is it ossible to control it or make it better with time by eating more fiber and having less fat, making the stool less hard that way? or what is your suggestion?

Thanks for the query. If it is hemorrhoids then make your stool soft by taking lots of fibres and water, take tablet containing calcium dobesilate which I found very useful in my patients

Thanks.

Few weeks ago i had a problem of very hard stool for a week. at that time I had trouble passing stool. since then my stool become normal but I have sometimes ithcing and buring in my anus. And also I started noticing that sometimes pus is coming out of my anus or I see pus nera my anus when I use a toilet paper.

Also I can see that there is a pimple like growth near my anal entry. It is small but I feel pus is also coming out from there. I went to a doctor and he said I probably have folliculitis and he prescribed me Flucloxacullin 500 mg 1+1+1+1 for 7 days . i have since then taken 7 pills so far but now i am seeing a bit increase in the pus discharge

Also the pus at first were creamy white and now I they are more like orange to brownish as you can see in the screenshot.

Also I have started doing a bit exercise very day now since the problem happen.

Can you please tell me what is going on?

Brief Answer:
get pus culture senstivity and drainage of abscess

Detailed Answer:
Thanks and sorry for delay. It appears to be anal abscess. Since it has been seven days you have been taking flucloxacillin and still it has not improved. I will advise you to get pus culture senstivity examination so rhat appropriate antibitic can be started. Also that abscess may require drainage for which you will have to revisit your doctor. I hope answered your query, please rate the answer and wish you a good health
