Does Voglistar Or Glycomet Affect Kidney?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: My Fasting Blood Sugar is 161, PGBS is 300, HB1AC is 8.0 & in Urine (PG) Sugar is >2gm%. I have fatty Liver. My Gall Bladder had been removed. My TSH is 8.7, Triglyceride is 290, LDL is 135, HDL is 38, Triglyceride is 290.

My Cardiologist Prescribed Vysov.M 50/1000 twice daily, but Endocrynologist Prscribed Glycomet-GP-1 in the morning and Voglistar MD 0.2 before Lunch & Dinner.

Which medicine should I take. I checked on the Internet. Both Vysov.M & Voglistar MD can affect Kidney and/or Liver. This worries me. What precautions shall I take?

Brief Answer:
Life style changes

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX Welcome to HCM.. I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First of all, I have been gone through all your reports. You have uncontrolled diabetes, high cholesterol and Hypothyroidism. In addition you also have vit D and vit B12 deficiency.

First for diabetes question - HBA1c report which suggests 3 monthly average blood sugar levels should be less than 7. So, you need to keep it under control.
Any of the 2 medicines (vysov M or glycomet GP) can be used. There is no much difference except the cost. No medicines we are prescribing for diabetes including voglistar MD will cause kidney or liver problems usually and commonly . So don't worry regarding side effects of this medicines.

Secondly, you should start medicines for high cholesterol and Hypothyroidism if you are not taking already. It needs to be controlled on priority basis.

Do, regular brisk walking daily for 1 hour, strict diet control and exercise. It will help you to control blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol.

Do your FBS, PP2BS AND HBA1c report every 3 monthly for adequate sugar control.
I hope I have given you satisfactory answer. If you have any questions, you are always welcome.
Thank you.
Have a nice day.

Thanks for your Advice.

I am taking medicines for High BP (CTD-O & Amlosafe), for Thyroid (Thyroup) and in the morning; and Tonact 20 for Cholesterol. There is no prescription for Vit B12 & Vit D. What is your advice on this?

Do you mean I should walk for 1 hr and in addition to it do exercise?
Now I am walking for about 30 minutes (I get completely tired) & trying to increase the time to 1 Hr. Also, I an thinking of taking the Treadmill for about 5 minutes? What more should I do.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Kindly read my detailed answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome again proff XXXXXXX your health consciousness is really appreciable.

My advice to you is -

1. You need to increase the dosage of Tonact and add a fenofibrate component for adequate control of cholesterol because your triglycerides are very high. I am sorry I can't prescribe anything online. You need written prescription from your doctor. You can take my guidance only.

2. Continue same dosage of thyroup at present and repeat thyroid profile after 2 months, because thyroid and cholesterol has direct relationship. Your cholesterol will be deceased when your thyroid will be normal.

3. One hour brisk walking is a sufficient exercise. Extra exercise will not be beneficial. Your blood pressure medicine combination is very good, continue same.

4.There are vitamin D sachets available, which has to be taken once weekly. Also you should take at least 5 vit B12 injections alternate days. But written prescription is very important. I can't prescribe. Sorry.

I hope my advice will definitely help you to be healthy as soon as possible.
Thank you.
Have a nice day.

I really appreciate your advice.

As for Thyroid, my Grand Mother (Maternal) had it. My mother had an operation for a tumor in her Pituitary Gland, and after that she used to have periodical episodes of Thyroid and Diabetics. My Wife also has Thyroid. My Grand mother died of Kidney failure, and most of us in the family believe that it is due to long term use of Thyroid Medicines. Is it a myth or true?

Brief Answer:
No. That's is myth.

Detailed Answer:
Hello proff XXXXXXX .

Thyroid medicines are the hormones which are normally produced in the body only. They are not actually medicines per se.

They are usually devoid of side effects unless used in higher dosage then required.

After pituitary surgery, thyroid problem is seen sometimes in a patient because most of the hormonal functions of the body is governed by pituitary gland. It's not related with thyroid medicines.

Using thyroid medicines has any Longterm hazards is totally a myth. Don't worry it's very safe in proper dosage.

I hope have cleared your doubts. If you are satisfied Kindly rate the answer.
Wishing you and your family good health.
Thank you.
