Are Delayed Periods Suggestive Of Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Apr 2017
Question: I am scared I may be pregnant. My last period was on 18/01/2017. My period is irregular in the sense that the start date varies each month but it usually comes every month and lasts for 7 days. The last time I had unprotected sex was on 16/03/2017 and my partner pulled out before he finished. I have taken countless at home pregnancy tests the most recent one being 2 days ago and they were all negative. This is the longest my period has been late. I sometimes skip a month but that has been normal occurrence for me but it has never been this late. I haven't noticed anything different besides my usual premenstrual symptoms (tender breasts, acne, mood changes) but I have lost 2kgs since my last period. I am 4"11 and usually weigh around 41-42kgs and am now 39kgs. I don't know if that affects my period or not and I haven't experienced any increase in stress. Could I be pregnant or is there anything else that might affect my period?

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand the concerns.
Delayed periods can be due to stress, pregnancy or hormonal imbalance like hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia or polycystic ovarian syndrome.
If the urine pregnancy test is negative, then the pregnancy is ruled out.
If stress is not a factor, then the hormonal imbalance should be ruled out by getting thyroid function test, serum prolactin levels and ultrasound done.
The diagnosis should be confirmed and appropriate treatment should be taken.
Pregnancy is highly unlikely in your case.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
