Thank you for your query
Your description of the symptoms and signs point to Strep. throat.
Your doctor is right.
Strep. throat (infection of the throat caused by bacteria called
Streptococcus) usually occurs in children and teenagers (4-16 years of age)
This infection, if severe, untreated or improperly treated may lead to complications like
Rheumatic heart disease (where the bacteria infect heart valve and cause malfunction in the long run) ;
glomerulonephritis (kidney damage) ;
peritonsillar abscess (around the tonsils);
toxic shock syndrome (when the bacteria releases toxins in the blood stream resulting in low blood pressure and organ failure).
Some may develop a red-pink rash with a characteristic sandpaper texture (
scarlet fever).
Penicillin is the drug of choice to treat these infections. If you are allergic to penicillin (
urticaria like rash, itching, swollen lips, stomach problems like diarrhea), you may be prescribed substitute antibiotics which are equally effective.
Make sure you complete the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better half way through. Pain killer can help ease throat ache, as will steam inhalation.
The white patches and dark red spots will go away on their own. If you don't feel better after 5days of treatment or you develop new symptoms, see your doctor to check for complications.
It is important that you hydrate yourself adequately, get extra sleep and eat a nutritious diet. Hydration should ensure a light colored urine, wet tongue. If the pain prevents you from drinking adequately, talk to your doctor for pain management.
Preventing spread of the infection is also equally important. Cover your mouth while you cough or sneeze. Don't share utensils or pillows. Wash your hands frequently.
