What Should I Do For The Large Lump On The Index Finger Knuckle That Occurred Due To A Deep Cut And Is Sore?

I have a large lump on my index finger knuckle. I cut it pretty deep about 3 weeks ago and should have gone in for stitches but didn t. I can bend my finger but it still hurts to do that. The lump is slightly raised, slightly red and hard, it doesn t look infected...it looks like the cut is healing but not together since I did not have stitches. I did experience some red streaks going up my hand but put Neosporin on it and the streaks went away....I am concerned about the lump and still experiencing pain and slight redness ...what should I do??? thanks

Hi,

I can understand your concern for large lump on the index finger knuckle that occurred due to a deep cut and is sore.

It is quite long time since you have got injury and it should heal by this time. Go for tetanus toxoid injection at the earliest if not done in last 1 year.

You should meet a dermatologist or any family physician and get a proper treatment without delay for the oral antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin or cefadroxyl 500 mg two times a day for 5 days to prevent secondary infection.

The most important precaution to follow is to not to try to even touch or pinch the area as can cause more aggravation of the problem and spread of the infection. For time being period you can apply antibiotic cream such as fucidin or mupirocin and take pain killer tablets such diclofenac or paracetamol.

Take care.
