What Is The Cause Of Vaginal Yeast Infections?

Recently I have had the following: unexplained weight gain (6 pounds in less than two weeks), tingling in fingers, sweet smelling urine, severe vaginal dryness, vaginal yeast infections and athletes foot. I am 42 years old, female, had two children without complication, still menstruating regularly. I am 5 6 , 165 lbs. Could this be diabetes? My mother had hypOglycemia.and my great grandmother had diabetes. No other history of diabetes in family. I have never had blood sugar problems before, even in my two preganancies. I have low cholesterol and low blood pressure. I have typically been moderately active, but less so over the past year.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

For the itching /discomfort, I suggest

- Wash the urethra and vaginally area with warm water to clean the area and then immediately with cool to cold water to relieve the itch.

Leave to air dry well after wiping with clean towel or tissue.
- drink plenty of water. Cranberry juice helps if you a urine infection.

If the yeast infection is confirmed, you will need antifungal treatment

- Clotrimazole ointment for local application twice a day for 2 weeks, to be gradually reduced in frequency after 2 weeks. Once at night for a week and then every alternate night for another week.

-Oral antibiotics /antifungals depending on whether you have a urine infection or severe yeast infection.

I suggest you see a doctor at the earliest to check for the cause and severity of the infection and to treat appropriately.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
