What Does Abnormal Pap Smear Diagnosed As ASCUS Indicate?

I have had two abnormal paps diagnosed as ascus, negative hpv. I am 52 years old and have never had an abnormal pap before this. The tests were 3 months apart. My doctor says she is not concerned and i don't need to have another pap for two years. I'm still concerned. It may not be cancer, but could it be something else?

Hello,
If you have been diagnosed not to have HPV infection, the HPV DNA test need not be done. The changes may be of no significance. They may be a consequence of a local infection or inflammation which may be non-specific. If you wish, you can get the pap smear repeated after 6 months- 12 months, instead of 2 years. Usually with an ASCUS state in an adult, this is how the tests are repeated. Please do not worry. You may also benefit from a cervical biopsy if needed. Hope this helps.
