What Causes Painful Lump On The Side Of Neck?

My son who is 9 years old, weighs 80 lbs., has a lump on the side of his neck. I took him to an after hours clinic last night when we first noticed it and they said to take him to his primary doctor on Monday. Is it okay to wait until Monday. He says it hurts and the pain is controlled with Ibuprofen. The doctor at the after hours clinic said it could be a cyst. He also complains of being hot but has no fever.

Hi...it could be cyst or it could be a tender lymph node. As the pain response to ibuprofen you can continue it.Definitely the child will need examination and investigation for this. You can wait till Monday only if the swelling does not increase or it is not associated with non responsive high grade fever
