What Causes Neck Pain While On Thyroxin?

Hi Doctor, I am a thyroid patient since 3 years, l am regularly taking thyroxin 100mg. 6 months back my TSH level was 0.50, so, I started to take thyroxine 100mg alternate days. now if I take thyroxine daily I am getting neck muscle pain, some times I am getting irritation, depresion, right chest pain like that. Is regular mediaction of Thyroxine can cause muscle problems? Yesterday I went for TSH testing, the TSH level is 10, now what should I do?

Hi,

The normal level of TSH is 0.5 to 5,however it depends upon the reference range given by your lab. If the T4 levels are low with raised or normal TSH, then it would mean that you have hypothyroidism and you would need Thyroxine tablets which need to be titrated with the hormone levels. Usually raised TSH is seen in hyperthyroidism.

In your question, T4 and T3 levels are not mentioned so its difficult to reply on the dosages. If your levels of t4 and t3 are within normal limits then you can continue the dose as you are taking now. If the t3 t4 are raised then you can bring down the dose. I would advise you to consult your treating doctor to regulate that. Side effects of thyroxine are anxiety, hyperactivity, weight loss, heat sensitivity, irritability etc. Chest pain might not be related to the drug, rest else could be because of the drug.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
