Pediatrician 's  Response

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Your daughter may require the help of a psychiatrist. Please contact him. After a physical examination and necessary investigations like thyroid profile he will advise the needful.

Depression may be associated with low self esteem and may be helped with psychiatric counselling. Some times anti depressants may be of help.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Pediatrician Dr. Rajiv K Khandelwal's  Response

Thank you for your query.

What you have described is not unusual and is not an illness. This issue can be tackled if handled professionally by a psychotherapist or a self-help group. No age is a bar for learning and with assistance with a psychologist you can certainly improve your daughter's self esteem. To start with you may take her teachers in confidence and work.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Wishing your daughter all the best.

Psychiatrist Dr. Anjana Rao Kavoor's  Response

Thanks for writing in,

As you have mentioned, since your daughter has problems of low confidence, low self worth and self esteem, difficulty in social skills, very sensitive and has been a persistent issue that has gradually developed over the years and not a sudden change there is a possibility of a personality disorder or a long standing chronic illness or it could simply be an adolescent's difficulty in coping with her surroundings.

An evaluation by a psychiatrist can diagnose it. It may be managed by therapies or counselling to help her cope well or correct any dysfunctional thoughts (which are likely to be present). After examination, if need be, medications may be prescribed.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao
