Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I recently was very ill with what I think is a stomach bug. I experienced vomiting and retching at first followed by diarrhea with no fever involved. After being laid up in bed all of yesterday I was finally able to keep water down today. What’s odd is that I broke out in a rash across my chest and stomach… I’m trying to figure out what I have whether it is food borne illness or indeed a virus. And if it is a virus what kind it might be. Thank you for your help.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Whether stomach flu or bacterial infection the basic treatment is same and added with an antibiotic if there is evidence of infection by stool tests and raised white cell count in CBC in blood tests, hence I would advise you to send the stool and blood sample for the tests and if positive your Doctor will give a proper antibiotic cover active against intestinal infection, Metronidazole, probiotics and symptomatic treatment for vomiting, nausea by giving a PPI like Omeprazole and Domperidone along with antacid. Also take plenty of oral fluids once the nausea and vomiting stops, take curds and bananas along with activated carbon. Use only boiled and cooled water. Intravenous fluids may be necessary if the vomiting does not get controlled initially to void dehydration and maintain electrolyte balance.
