Suffering From Acute Tonsillitis. Taking Antibiotics, Penicillin Drip. Recovery Period?

Iv had acute tonsillitis for 12 days now and have been prescribed several antibiotics including a 1 nightb stay in an Italian hospital with penicillin drip(started in Italy), none of which are working. how long does it take for them to kick in.? I am unable to eat for this time with the exception of hot beverages like soup. My tonsils are still extremly swollen and still covered in white spots even after all this medication. My doctor in Ireland has told me to just wait it out.

Hi,
From history it seems that you might be having acute follicular tonsillitis.
As antibiotics given might be resistant to infection.
Go for throat swab examination for causative bacteria and sensitivity test.
After report go for specific antibiotic medicine course for 5-7 days.
Do antiseptic gargling.
Avoid cold drinks and junk food.
Ok and take care.

Hi,
since your swollen tonsils have white spots, this suggest follicular tonsillitis.
Follicular tonsillitis take some time to recovery because of pus inside(10-14 days).

Usually infected with streptococci and hence penicillin is the right choice of drug. If you are not responding you can take Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid capsules twice daily with NSAID and do betadine gargle. Take plenty of fluids. These will help you to recover fast.
If pus is collected with blocking of crypt opening then requires drainage of pus.
If you suffer more often with this you can undergo tonsillectomy later.

Hope this helps you
Regards
