Should I Be Concerned As I Am Having Bruising On Toenail And Bleeding In Cuticle?

Hi, I dropped an ironing board on my right big toe. It was immediately bruised. So at the time I put it in ice water to make my toe stop hurting because it was throbbing in pain. Doing that helped. The next day my toe felt much better, but it had a giant bruise on the toenail. Well it has been about a month or so now and all of a sudden one day right by the cuticle it started bleeding and then the bleeding stopped and now this weird clear/yellowish/brownish stuff is leaking out. Then after a while I noticed that that stuff started to smell. Everybody tells me that my toe nail is just going to fall off and that I should just give it time. Well I'm concerned. Is it just my toe nail falling off or is it something else?

Hi. Thanks for posting your concern at HCM

In subungual hematomas the nail develops a black discoloration overlying the nail bed but under the nail plate. The bleeding comes from the vascular nail bed underlying the avascular nail plate.

Subungual hematoma typically heal without incident, though infection or disruption of the nail (onycholysis) may occur.

The clear/yellowish/brownish stuff that you see coming out could be because it might have got infected. I would have advised a week of oral antibiotics along with topical antibacterials like mupirocin twice daily.

take care

Hi,

I am quite empathetic to bruising after injury on toenail and bleeding in cuticle.

In your case you got injury without any penetration injury into the skin but presently the foul smelling nature of oozing is bit alarming. As your toe nail is already been damaged with blood clot in it so is the medium for the growth of these organisms causing infection and so bad odor.

For the betterment kindly follow the suggestions below:

- The first important thing is vaccination for tetanus if not done in recent past.

- You can do warm water compresses two time a day for 5 minutes each time.

- Apply mupirocin or fucidin cream paint 3-4 times a day.

- The next thing is a proper antibiotic coverage. You should take an antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin 500 mg 2 times a day for 5 days.

- Do not try to pinch or press the area as it can lead to further aggravation.

Despite above measures if the problem is not getting better then it is better to consult a dermatologist or family physician for best guidance.

Take care.
