Should Child Be Taken To Emergency Room After Rash Due To Medicine?
Hello, my 3 year old has been taking amoxicillion for 7 days out of 10. This morning after giving her her dosage, she developed red itchy bumps all over her legs and buttocks, some on her arms and a couple on her torso. Called her Dr and was told to stop giving her the amox and give her benedryl. I have given her 2 dosage of benedryl and her rash has gotton worse and so is her itching. Do you think I should take her to the ER? Thank you
Usually allergic reaction to amoxicillin occurs with in 24-48 hours of starting, although it can occur after few days also. Sometimes such such reaction occur as part of the underlying infection also. Since the clinical features are typical of drug reaction, we have to take it as drug reaction unless proven otherwise, and discontinue the drug.
If it is not getting down with benadryl, it is better to take him to ER, as there is chance of progression to a severe reaction with stridor / wheezing / breathing difficulty. In such cases he will need inject-able drugs like steroids. If you have, you can give him prednisolone tab 20 mg now itself.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
