Severe Pain In Both Breasts. Sono-mammography Recommended. Simple Sonogrpahy Or Complicated Procedure?

Hi Doc, My mother (52 Yrs) is suffering from acute pain in both the breasts for a long time .... may be years... but she used to hide it. Now, she is recommended by our Gynecologist to undergo a sonomammography ASAP. Does this examination includes any biopsy like procedures or is it a simple sonography of the breasts. Thanks

Thank your for asking your query at HCM. Sonomammography is a simple ultrasound of the breast and is not painful and does not include a biopsy. A biopsy is only required if some abnormality is found on the sonomammogram.

It is also advisable that you consult a breast surgeon for this problem and have him/her evaluate the breasts.

Hope your mother gets well soon.

Mammosonograpy is a simple and non-invasive diagnostic tool for any breast lumps to see the nature as well the extent of the lump and a good sonologist would be able to make a fairly good diagnosis looking st its echogenic character. Once the diagnosis is made it's the job of the specialist, gynaecologist or a breast surgeon to decide whether to have a biopsy done for her or not. Because of her age, one can not wait a long for such simple procedure.

Hi .
Welcome to HCM,Thanks for the query.
No its not at all complicated.
You will be asked to lie on your back with your arm raised above your head on the examining bed. For Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) you will be asked to lie on your back. We will place a pillow underneath your body and find a position where your breast will be flat and your nipple pointing towards the ceiling. You will then be asked to raise your arm above your head.
Our radiologist will apply some gel on your skin and press the handheld probe firmly, moving it back and forth over the area of interest until the desired images are taken. For Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS), our technologist will spread some lotion on the entire breast and bring the scanner to the breast, centering the arrow on your nipple. Your technologist will add some pressure to achieve good contact of the scanner to the breast. The technologist will instruct you to stay still while the scanning is in progress. We will do this procedure for a minimum of three positions and maximum of five positions depending on the cup size of your breast.
.
The breast ultrasound exam will take a 15 to 20 minutes.
Hoping good health for ypour mom .
Many Thanks ,
Dr Shilpi Gupta
