Prescribed Tetralysal For Acne On Face And Body But Causing Rashes And Itchy Scalp

Hello, I am a 30 year old male and since I can remember I have had some sort of acne on my face or body. I have tried all sorts of skin creams/tablets both from the doctor and the shops and I still have them. The spots on my face have pretty much cleaned up but I still get them on my body. Recently I went to the doctor and asked for something to get rid of the spots on my chest, stomach and back as they are extremly itchy. I was perscribed some Tetralysal. I started taking them about 2 weeks ago BUT it feels like my body is on fire with a rash. I also have a very itchy scalp. I have looked into what could cause the spots on my body and ruled out bed bugs, changed my fabric conditioner, stopped using certain body washes. I have stopped taking the tablets but what do I do now?

Dermatologist 's  Response

Hi,
I can understand the concern for rash on face and body but causing rashes and itchy scalp.
After reading your history it appears to be two possibilities:

1. Drug rash: these are red areas specifically on trunk region and on abdomen with pain and burning sensation.

2.Allergic contact dermatitis: It is due to some contact allergen. You can go for patch test to rule out the exact cause.

For the same you can meet a dermatologist or your treating doctor who will guide you properly.

I advise you to not pinch or pop the area otherwise these areas are very prone for getting secondary infection. For time being period you can apply steroid based cream such as Mometasone or Fluticasone and take antihistamine tablet such as loratadine or cetrizine.

Do not try to even touch or pinch the area as can cause more aggravation of the problem.

Stay in cool place and and avoid sweating and humidity.

Take care.
