Pain In The Back. Could It Be Due To The Long Term Use Of Oxycontin?

Hi I've been taking oxycontin 40mg for about 14 years. My PC doctor asked if I had liver problems due to hep c I think I may have some minor cirrosus of the liver. I have severe orthopedic pain in back - scoliosis extreme pain in the upper part of legs where they bend- maybe upper sockets. I can not walk far without extreme pain that stops me in my tracks until it subsides somewhat.I think my Pc doctor my be trying to discontinue my pain meds. this would make my life intolerable! I don not believe Oc's are hurting my liver. I believe there is some other reason for her suggestion about my pain med and liver problem. could you advise me please?

Hello,

Thanks for posting,

I do not think your oxycodone is responsible for your back pain as it is itself a narcotic pain killer which is usually associated with some dependency issues. It seems to me your doctor is trying to discourage you because he feels you already having the dependency issues and withdrawal will definitely come with its own problems. Both you and your primary care doctor have to be careful on the next move you make as in either case, you might face situations.
You might need to go through some rehab and be placed on another time of pain medicine if your back pain continues. If discontinuing it has to be gradual by reducing dosage with time until you are minimal dosing. In relationship to your liver, oxycodone might have slightly after your liver over time given that most of its side effects are digestive. I suggest your PC doctor runs a LFT to determine the state of your liver and possible do an abdominal scan. Also CT scan of your spine should be indicated.

Hope this helps
