Milk Accumulation, Pain, Uneasiness N Child Face, Prescribed Hifenac D. Side Effect?

Hello ,
I am a 34 yr old mother, breast feeding my son who is 3 weeks old. I had some kind of milk accumulation which is causing pain. The doctor had asked me to take Hifenac D for 6 days. Will this affect my son in any way as I am breastfeeding him ? I have been noticing some kind of uneasiness in his face for the past 3 days and I'm a little worried if this could because of the tablet.

Dear friend,

I am Dr. (Col) R Karanwal, M.D. (Internal Medicine), Consultant Physician, for your assistance.

Thanks for reposing your faith in me and post your query on this website. I fully appreciate your concerns.

During breastfeeding, infections can occur if bacteria enter your breast tissue (due to abrasions caused by the baby during sucking), or if the milk ducts (tiny tubes that carry milk) become blocked. This can cause inflammation in the breast, which, if untreated, can result in an abscess forming.

If you have fever, pain and redness over the breast, you should immediately consult your Gynac, who will prescribe you antibiotics. If there is no fever or redness, there may be congestion of milk. In this case, you may use breast suction pump to extract congested milk.

Please feel free to revert back to me in case of further clarifications, if any.

I am sure that you will benefit from the advice.

HAVE A NICE DAY AND A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal

OBGYN Dr. Timothy Raichle's  Response
Hello, I would be happy to help you with your question.

You likely have a clogged mild duct, but anyone who is breastfeeding and experiencing breast pain needs a breast exam to rule out infection or a breast mass. I can find little information on Hifenac as it relates to breast-feeding, but one source does state "use with caution in pregnancy and lactation". So it is probably harmless, but as with anything that you eat that the baby might not "agree" with during breast-feeding, if you sense some discontent, then maybe you should stop taking it. Also, ask for a lactation consult.

I hope that this helps!
