Menopausal For Years, Had Spotting, Light Bleeding. Ultrasound Showed Hyperplasia. Biopsy Normal. Follow Up Required?

I am 61 years old and have been menopausal for years. I recently had 3 months of spotting and light bleeding. I went to my doctor who did an ultrasound, he said it showed a "thickening of the endrometrium" he said I had hyperplasia.
He did a endrometrial biopsy on Thursday, the following Tuesday the nurse called and said the biopsy was "normal" and did not have any cancer. It is now a week later and I haven't heard anything since the nurse called - the doctor never talked to me. Can I assume that the hyperplasia is gone and that I am now "normal" as the biopsy showed. Is there no follow up to this procedure? My bleeding is gone...so should I just forget about it now? Is an endrometrial biopsy like a pap smear...no cancer found...so nothing to work about? It just seems like there was something wrong and now there isn't because the biopsy was "normal"...

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Endometrial hyperplasia generally occurs in menopausal women in response to estrogen.
Biopsy can diagnose type of hyperplasia.Atypical type is of concern as it has propensity to convert into cancerous ones.
But, in your case biopsy is normal means it is simple type and mostly this condition is treated by progestin whereas in atypical type hysterectomy should be considered.
Pap smear is used for cervix to screen cervical cancer.
Hope I have answered your question.
You should not be worried as you have simple type.
Get well soon.

Hello. There is a direct relation between endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer (mucosal layer of the uterus). The biopsy may show atypical cells (suggestive of cancer) or not (as is your case) but endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the layer) continuous and you must be periodically monitored by ultrasound to see if it increases the thickness of endometrium or there are signs suggestive of cancer. Also if you have bleeding again, you must too go to the gynecologist.
I wish you good health.
