Is Small Simple Bilateral Follicles Normal On Ovaries?

I have just had a pelvic Uss for symptoms of abdominal discomfort and bloating. I am getting tested for celiacs also. Now, on scan they found multiple fibroids on my uterus and the report stated the right ovary had a dominant follicle. ( I had just ovulated). The report also stated i have small simple follicles seen bilaterally. Is this normal or does it mean there could be a problem with the ovaries?? the right measured 12ml in volume and the left only 4mls.

Small simple follicles on your ovaries are completely normal findings. They are not any reason to be concerned at the sizes that you mentioned. The fibroids can cause problems, but most fibroids don't cause any issues. However, if the fibroids are very large, or if they are located in certain places such as within the uterine cavity, they can cause heavy bleeding, cramping, pressure, and other symptoms. I am so sorry that you are going through this, you should talk to your doctor about whether or not he/she thinks that the fibroids might be related to your symptoms. That will depend on the factors I mentioned above, and the exact symptoms you are suffering from. I hope this was helpful, please let me know if you have any more questions.

OBGYN Dr. Aarti Abraham's  Response
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Multiple uterine fibroids are not of any consequence unless symptomatic.
Troublesome symptoms would include - increased menstrual bleeding, pain during periods, difficulty in urinating, distension.
Also, the size matters, and your age too.
With menopause they generally shrink if small in size relatively.
Regarding the follicles, this could be PCOS - polycystic ovarian syndrome.
It is characterized by multiple small cyst like follicles present on both the ovaries.
There is baseline hormonal imbalance.
Periods are liable to be irregular and ovulation maybe erratic.
Also, conception might be a difficulty.
If this is just ultrasound finding, and you have none of the symptoms, do not read much into the report.
You might need Metformin to regulate cycles.
Clomiphene is often required to stimulate ovarian follicular development.
Weight loss and daily exercise often help.
All the best.
Take care.
