Is Continuous Brown Spotting A Side Effect Of Taking BC Shot?

Hello I am 5'3 , and 24 years old. I just recently started using Depo -provera on the 29th of June, i didnt have a period until August 3rd, and since then i have been brown spotting for almost a week and half now. How long will the spotting continue? I will receive my second shot in september, will it stop by then? This is the only side effect i have had with the BC shot. Im not sure whether to continue using it or not. I just do not like the spotting. My husband will be coming for RnR in october from afghanistan and this may sound silly but I would not like to have intercourse if this continues. It would make it all awkward. Also is there anything to stop the spotting? Please help.

Hi,

Depo provera injection contains medroxyprogesterone acetate and serves the purpose of contraception. During early months of the usage it can lead to side effects like amenorrhea, irregular spotting etc.

And usually in few months these will get corrected as hormonal balance will be maintained. So, if the spotting persists you can consult your Gynecologist once and take tablets like anti fibrinolytic drugs eg. tranexamic acid which can decrease the spotting without affection the efficacy of Depo.

If this helps, you can go for your second shot and with your doctor's advice you can keep few tablets of tranexa and if needed can use in October if spotting disturbs you. Possible during the second shot menstrual irregularity may get resolved.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
