How Long Should Mucinex Be Taken?

How long may I take Mucinex 12 hour 600 ml. -- I have been taking this pill twice a day -- and there seems to be some dispute among Doctors on how long I can remain on the pills -- I have been told it is O.K. to take it indefinatly and another that I must take it for 2 weeks then go off of it -- and resume taking it after 7 days -- so what is the scoop ??? Thank You - Shirley Strauch

This medication is used for the temporary relief of coughs caused by the common cold, bronchitis, and other breathing illnesses. This product is usually not used for ongoing cough from smoking or long-term breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema) unless directed by your doctor. It works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, clearing congestion, and making breathing easier. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually every 12 hours with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. Fluids will help to break up mucus and clear congestion. Tell your doctor if your condition returns, or if it is accompanied by fever, severe sore throat, rash, persistent headache, or if it persists or worsens after 7 days. These may be signs of a serious medical problem. This drug is only for symptomatic relief and should not be used for long duration. Consult a doctor and find out the root problem and get treated accordingly. All the best
