Common cold

What is Common cold?

The common cold (also known as nasopharyngitis, rhinopharyngitis, acute coryza, head cold, or simply a cold) is a viral infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract which primarily affects the nose.

Signs and symptoms include coughing, sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, and fever which usually resolve in seven to ten days, with some symptoms lasting up to three weeks. Well over 200 virus strains are implicated in the cause of the common cold; the rhinoviruses are the most common.

Upper respiratory tract infections are loosely divided by the areas they affect, with the common cold primarily affecting the nose, the throat (pharyngitis), and the sinuses (sinusitis), occasionally involving either or both eyes via conjunctivitis. Symptoms are mostly due to the body's immune response to the infection rather than to tissue destruction by the viruses themselves. The primary method of prevention is by hand washing with some evidence to support the effectiveness of wearing face masks. The common cold may occasionally lead to pneumonia, either viral pneumonia or secondary bacterial pneumonia.

No cure for the common cold exists, but the symptoms can be treated. It is the most frequent infectious disease in humans with the average adult getting two to three colds a year and the average child getting between six and twelve. These infections have been with humanity since antiquity.

I have a high heart rate and need a bit of help to calm myself down. I'm overweight(1,75 meters, 90 kg's) and my heart rate is 97-101 beats per minute. I'm also sick now(that nasty common cold) and just got off pneumonia medication(I.E. antibiotics) a week ago. I'm also 14, turning 15 in about 2 months. Is this heart rate normal and if it's not could all of the factors above influence my heart rate?

I have been prescribed 2mg diazepam for a flight as i occasionally suffer from panic attacks, more often when preparing to get on or already on a plane. Can you tell me the best way to take it and what effect it is going to have because i have had a panic thinking about taking the medication now too because I have a cold that had settled onto my chest and the information leaflet says not to take if you are breathless. Thanks

doctor1 MD

Hello.

First of all, if it is a common cold that you have, it doesn't mean you are breathless. The leaflet probably wants to mean breathlessness when there is increased respiratory effort such as in heart failure, respiratory failure, etc. Common cold rarely leads to a breathless of that kind....

my nephew who is 1 month old has had a bad cough for the past week. his parents took him to the ER the other day and they said it was not RSV, but just the common cold that has been going around. Today his mother called me worried. he has been coughing A LOT today and she said his skin has become mottled. she said his lips are not blue, but his nail beds are a slightly bluish color and the mottling is all over. Which he did not have before. She said he was eating a little less than before and she said he looks like he is working a little harder to breath. I told her to go to the ER. Does mottled skin have anything to do with breathing difficulties in a 1 month old?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Your nephew requires urgent medical attention.

This is because you mentioned two important points one should be concerned in a baby with cough. The bluish coloration of fingers is not normal and may indicate hypoxia and cyanosis. A baby who is working...

Dear Physician,

I have frequent bronchitis and pneumonia. It seems that whenever i get the common cold/flu it becomes bronchitis/pneumonia and triggers periods (several weeks) of chest pain/tightness and breathlessness. I am wondering if i may be slightly asthmatic and they are related. I do not cough or wheeze. I have had these infections every 4-6 months for the past 4 years or so. This why i am very concerned. I am 27 and have a smoking history. I plan to see a physician for chest x-ray. For the moment i am wondering if this sounds like i may have asthma. I do not have problems with physical activity at all.

doctor1 MD

HI there,
Welcome to HCM.
Flu leading to bronchitis and pneumonia and this causing breathlessnes and wheeze is not asthma. Asthma as such is usually allergic meaning it gets triggered when exposed to allergens, pollen, dust etc. This exposure causes swelling and increased secretions in the...

My son is almost 7. Very high functioning autism which is only important in this situation because of his non-compliance with continuing with tylenol and his refusal to have blood draw and the labs quick reply that I should bring him back when he is ready to comply. He s been sick now for about 3 weeks. Started with 48 hours vomitting...then about a week later diareha, pooed himself while asleep a couple of times...then just seemed to be brewing a cold that never broke until last week he was pretty much lethagic, curled up in a fetal position with head on my chest...sleeping, much decreased apetitie and fluid intake. Had been able to get him to take tylenol intermittentl because he seemed to be feverish. He s had a chest x and its clear. green fluid stool is at the lab pending results for O and P (I think). But has refused blood draw, despite very heavy incentives. Still runny nose and cough. What do you think could be going on?

recently we are constructing house in first floor and we are in the ground floor. It started during Jan month. But now recently my mom got affected with severe cough after which i got it and then my 4 years old son too. Eventhough it is not severe to my son, it is very sever to both of us. My mom consulted doctor , got even antibiotic injection too with lot of tablets and cough syrups. But nothing works out. This cough is completely different from our orginial cold cough. We both cough in same way. Giving more pressure to throat and cough give us relaxation but it is not continous. some irritation happens as if some smoke is inside our throat and then we get cough. We got even flu inside chest which comes when we cough. Am 35 years old but this is the first time i got flu in my chest. Please advise
