Heaviness In Chest With Pain, Harder Heartbeat, Tingling In Left Arm, Face Goes Numb. Family History Of Heart Disease. Advice ?

39, 110', 5'4", family history of heart disease, sibling passed away at 59 of heart attack, father also passed from heart attack, also history of anxiety, quit smoking appx 1 year ago, very light drinker. Recently I have started feeling a funny heaviness in my chest along with pain, sometimes heartbeat simply feels off like its beating harder than normal or skipping a beat, left arm tingles and feels heavy and face goes numb. I am in no way a hypochondriac and normally find the simplest and least severe explanations possible for my illnesses but I am at a loss with this. I have been under quite a bit of stress with my oldest child and my granddaughter so this could be playing a part in this scenario, I am also fatigued often and have a lot of trouble sleeping at night, I wake many times and have trouble falling to sleep. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks for using healthcare magic.

I have gone through your history.

Heaviness in chest in you case seems to be due to anxiety but physical causes including cardiac causes must be ruled out. You should consult your doctor for the same.
Doctor may advise battery of investigations to rule out physical causes.

Once sure it is due to anxiety, you should consult psychiatrist for detailed evaluation. Doctor may prescribe anti anxiety agents like cloanzepam or etizolam or buspiron or may advise anti depressant agents like peroxetine.

Meanwhile , you may do stress management and relaxation exercise like breathing exercise or yoga or meditation for better control over stress.

Thanks.

Psychiatrist Dr. Sundar Gnanavel's  Response
Hello.....
Thanks for your query. I would encourage you to meet a psychiatrist for assessment of evaluation for anxiety disorders. Tingling sensation, palpitations and numbness are all typical symptoms of anxiety disorder. The treatment consists of: anti-anxiety agents like SSRIs and psychotherapy techniques like CBT/Cognitive behavioural therapy. Sleep difficulty would not require an individual intervention. Wish you good health.
