Having Itchy Scalp With Swollen Red Bumps, Flu-like Symptoms, Swollen Lymph Node. On Antibiotics & A Topical Steroid Cream. Swelling In The Face Noticed. Cause?

My husband has had an itchy scalp quite a while now & nothing has worked. Just last week, he had flu like symptoms (whole body aches, etc.) for several days along with a big lump at the base of the skull. He also had a swollen lympnode in the back of the neck. And the scalp itching was driving him crazy but his head was to tender to scratch. The lump went away after about 2 days. However, that same day his temple became very swollen & red. Each day since, the swelling seems to move. The temple is no longer swollen. Currently, all around his eye is now swollen. His scalp now has large red areas (not the same as the little red dots that had caused itching in the past). He saw a Dr. on Monday morning. Dr. didn't seem to know what the problem would be. He was given antibiotics & a topical steriod cream for the swelling on his face. So far, no relief. Any ideas?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi welcome to healthcaremagic. Thanks for writing here. Your husband at present having severe itching of scalp with swelling around face.It is suggestive of some allergic reaction. Just check out whether he used a new hair dye or a hair shampoo or any oil,and ask to discontinue them. You can apply a wet clothe wrapped around his head which will give soothing effect.Continue with antibiotics and steroid cream.Start oral anti allergy drugs like avil twice daily. Sometimes if rash do not subside then he will require systemic steroids. In that case you can consult a dermatologist and take treatment accordingly.Take care.

Hello.Your husband is suffering from an important skin inflammation.
It should be seen by a dermatologist to know the cause (may be contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema).Dermatologist will examine him and request additional test if he deems it necessary
(biopsy for example).Probably he will need oral drugs to improve your symptoms(corticosteroids and
antihistamine)to be prescribed by the dermatologist.I wish you goog health.
