Have Had Bleeding, Have Prolapsed Pedunculated Fiber. Recommended Hysterectomy And Ultrasound. What Should I Do?

I am 51. I have had children and fertility is no longer an issue for me. After 3 months of bleeding I went to the doctor and his exam found that I have a prolapsed pedunculated fiber as well as two other fibers that he detected via an abdominal check. He put my uterous at 14+ weeks. The penduncle fiber appears to have a thich trunk and bled a lot as well as caused pain when he moved it. He recommends a hysterectomy. My other option is to just remove the penduncle fiber in an outpatient procedure and potentially have the other masses shrink. I have opted for an ultrasound to be sure that I agree this is the right approach. My doctor says there are little to no added risk in the hysterctomy at my age . Do you agree? His comment about not wanting to lose a week worried me and when he told the technician to get me in for the ultrasound right away I was worried that I am delaying unnecessary. I trust this doctor. I am considering calling him and asking to move forward with his recommendation. I consider all surgery to be serious so I am worried.

Hello ma'am.

At your age, as you rightly said, fertility is not an issue. The fibroid will grow and cause further complications as it grows larger and larger. The best approach to treating a fibroid and preventing recurrences in the future in a post or pre-menopausal woman is a hysterectomy. This way, fibroids cannot recur and you will be symptom free.

Also, the procedure ensures retaining of the ovaries which produce the hormones you require to prevent suffering from menopausal symptoms. In my opinion, you should not delay any further. Please go ahead.

Best wishes.

Take care.
