Does The Thickening Of The Uterus Indicate Cancer?

I was told today to see a gyncologist as the sonogram showed a thickening of the lining of the uterus. My mother had cancer of the utuerus and died at 56. I am 64. I had fibroids but never had them removed. I have an appointment tomorrow for a checkup but am worried. Does a thickening of the uterus lining mean that you have cancer?

Hi,

I understand your concern. Thickened endometrium in the post menopausal period is indeed an issue of concern. But it does not mean that it is cancer. There are conditions called endometrial hyperplasia in which the lining thickens but there is no cancer. Excess levels of estrogen may give rise to such condition.

The best way to diagnose this is by a hysteroscopy guided biopsy. It is a good sign that the thick endometrium has been detected early and you can be investigated further. If you have no symptoms, than chances of cancer are low. Also even if it is a cancer, it is more likely to be stage I as it is slow growing and does not spread. Surgery helps in cure.

So please do not worry as you are having yourself investigated early.
