Does Head Injury Cause Nausea And Dizziness?

I have recently had a car accident and my head is painful on the right side. CT scans are negative. My chiropractor and my MD say I present as if I have had a head injury. I have nausea and dizziness constantly and I smell ammonia all the time. Why would I smell ammonia all the time?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that your CT head is negative, you are conscious and oriented. Now coming to your complaints of nausea, dizziness and abnormal smell, it could be due to post concussion, medication side effects, post traumatic stress disorder. According to your symptoms, we can reach unto some conclusion
: If you are taking multiple drugs, consult your doctor for side effects. Drugs like anti epileptic medication can cause such effects. Stop those drugs which are causing these effects. You will get relief.
: Post concussion symptoms can present like this. You can take pantoprazole for nausea, beta-histine for dizziness after proper prescription. For abnormal smell, get your smell checked or you can check it at home by closing one side nose at a time and smelling coffee/soap/mint from other nose. Keep your eyes closed and identify by smelling. if your smell is normal, then you should consult doctor for psychiatric complaints.
: Sometimes post injury, psychiatric complaints like post traumatic stress disorder, depression can cause such symptoms. It can be suspected if no other cause or disease is present, symptoms increase in stress condition, history of insomnia/night sweats, physical examination is normal.
For management, you should consult Psychiatrist. Try to be calm. Avoid stress.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care.
