Child. Viral Fever, Redness In Throat, Blood Around Tooth On Top Of Mouth, No Proper Food Intake, Pain Even While Drinking Water. Advice

Hi I have a two and half year old who last Monday night had temp of 38 I took him to the doctor on Tuesday with temp of 37.5 and she said he had a virus most likely. I took him back Thursday to check as still not much better in over all health, however throat very red, but ears, temp, and chest sounded all good. I noticed on Saturday his gums where extremely red and when I looked in his mouth he had blood around each tooth on the top of mouth. He refuses to eat and does not want any pain relief as it stings his mouth. We are up to day 4 of very little food except tonight he finally ate ice cream for dinner. He goes to drink out of water bottle and just screams.

Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

I believe your child is suffering from oropharyngitis (infection which spreads from mouth into the throat or pharynx) and since this has been evolving for several days. If the throat is very red and swollen then it might be a bacterial infection (strep throat) responsible and will require a course of antibiotics specific to streptococcus infection). Given his age, he may not be able to take betadine or salt gargles to clear off the infection and since he is not able to swallow much, it will not be wise to place him on oral medication. He might require some few injections of antibiotics and antiinflammatory which can help clear off the infection a little, then placed on oral treatment such as Penicillin V so he can now take without feeling much pains.

Hope this helps
