Can Treated Stroke Cause High BP,irritability And Fatigue?

Hi, My partner had a mild stroke last November after he was prescribed to take the medicine for high blood pressure called Enalapril, 10 mg last November 2010. He has had high blood pressure for maybe about 5 years and he refused to seek medical help. It was only in November last year that he went to see the doctor and was prescribed the medicine. The first symptom of stroke was that he felt dizziness on the 2nd day after taking the prescribed medicine. The third day he felt numbness on his right hand. He then reduced the medicine into half suspecting that maybe the medicine was causing it all. But later on the fifth day he decided to take the whole tablet (10 mg) and on that same day he was rushed to the emergency ward because his right hand started to paralyzed and his speech started to slow down as he was in a meeting when it occured. He was diagnosed to have a stroke and was put into the rehabilitation ward. He is now an outpatient, He could actually walk and talk but his right hand and arms are a bit week. He was told to exercise it with different tools so that he maybe able to regain normal strenght on his right hand and arm. By the way, he was also prescribed to take other medicine like, Behepan, l mg, Trombyl, 75 mg, Salures, 5 mg. and Simvastatin, 20 mg. Recent blood test shows that his blood values are normal. My question is, could the medicine, called Enalapril could cause side effects like stroke? Also, I would like to consul the personality change. He became easily irritated and tired. He would really explode because he wanted to have explanation for things. He said that he felt manipulated when no explanation is given, Is this normal behaviour for people who had stroke? Please advise. Thank you very much.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Regarding the question on Enalapril I don't think it had anything to do with that, it is not a side effect of the drug. If anything in long term it helps in preventing stroke by reducing blood pressure. The fact that he had the stroke during those days was a coincidence, at times blood pressure reducing drugs can cause very low pressure when the dose is high but 10 mg is not such a high dose.
As for the question on whether the stroke can cause behavior changes, yes if the damage involves certain areas dealing with emotions and behavior it can lead to behavior changes. Another explanation could be the fact that the disability which suddenly affected him predisposed him to depression.

I hope to have been of help.
