Could Bloating And Stomach Pain Be Due To Simvastatin Intake?

I have been taking a 5 mg simvastatin for about 4 weeks and have been having a bloated stomach, hard stomach pains, and have felt very weak for the last week. I stopped taking them about 4 days ago to see if that was the cause. Could this medicine cause these symptoms?

Hi,

Yes, bloating, stomach pain, and weakness are known side effects of simvastatin. Simvastatin is a medication used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood, and it works by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver. However, like any medication, simvastatin can cause side effects in some people.

Bloating and stomach pain are common gastrointestinal side effects of simvastatin. Some people may also experience weakness or fatigue as a side effect. These symptoms can occur shortly after starting the medication or after taking it for a longer period.

If you have stopped taking the medication and the symptoms have improved, it is possible that the simvastatin was the cause. However, discussing your symptoms with your healthcare provider to determine the cause and appropriate management is important. Your healthcare provider may recommend alternative medications or adjust the dosage of simvastatin to minimize the side effects.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
