What Causes Irregular Periods?

I am a 20 year old female and have had regular periods for as long as i can remember. starting this year i have gained weight in my stomach area and have been missing periods for sometimes two months at a time. i feel weak daily and i have cramps everyday it seems like with no period. is this normal?

Hi,

Being overweight, stress, sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits can cause irregular cycles. If you are overweight loosing a few pounds will definitely help in regularizing the cycles. Even simple regular exercise will help in correcting the hormonal imbalance.

If that's not the case you can rule out common endocrine causes for the same. Lab test on serum TSH and fasting levels of prolactin can be done. If it is normal it is worth doing an ultrasound pelvis to rule out the most common cause which is PCOD and may be other less common pathologies.
