Can I Take Calcium Supplements While Also Taking Thyronorm For Hyperthyroidism?

Hello Doctor, I am a 36 year old female (single) recently diagnosed with TSH 8.17 where T3 and T4 are within the limit. I took thyroid test because i had severe body pain and weight gain. I consulted my family doctor who is not an endocrinologist and she suggested me to take Thyronorm 100 mcg. For second opinion I consulted another MBBS doctor, he also prescribed Thyronorm 100 mcg. My mother has hyperthyroidism (TSH lower than normal and she is on medication). So, she urged me to see an endocrinologist. She saw the report and asked me take CBC and Vitamin D test when I said about severe body pain. My vitamin D level came out to be 6 where the normal should be within 30-100. She advised me to take Drise for 8 weeks and she asked me to take calcium supplement as well. She advised me not to start medication for thyroid until I finishes 8 weeks of Drise consumption, she is specific telling my T3 and T4 levels are normal. However, I feel very tired and I am gaining weight and my face is always swollen. Kindly advice. Thanks in advance!

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
Good day.
From the reports, you have a condition called subclinical hypothyroidism. However, looking at the family profile, you have a tendency to develop auto immune thyroid disease ( I presume your mom has Grave's disease with hyperthyroidism). At this stage, there is no need to take 100 mcg Thyronorm. You need to check Anti TPO antibody. In subclinical hypothyroidism, we tend to treat patient if they have a goiter/pregnancy/infertility/ TSH > 10 and if cholesterol is elevated as well as if Anti TPO is positive. Otherwise we tend to watch and repeat TSH after 3-4 months. You have a fair chance of progression to a full hypothyroidism looking at the family tendency.
Your Vitamin D level is low and please follow your endocrinologist's advice. You will also require some sun exposure daily between 9 am to 3 pm for atleast 15 minutes a day. Check your Free T4 and TSH in 3 months time.

Regards
Binu
