Hello,

Piriton CS has only anti-histamines so will only help for a few hours at the most. Viral coughs do not get better with cough syrups, if there is a mild fever, start antibiotics especially if there is productive phelgm.
Night time awakenings due to cough is a sign of asthma so if this continues then a trial of Salbair or Ventorlin can be tried.
Montelukast with levocetirizine may help if you do want a trial of inhalers.

Paracetamol to lower temperature, Montek-LC KID or salbair should suffice.
Get him to a doctor to evaluate before starting any medications.

Best Wishes.

General Surgeon Dr. M Y Shareef's  Response
Hi ! If the child is having an allergic cough, Piriton CS along with some steam inhalation may help. However, most of the time, the allergic cough is associated with super added infection. Therefore, if the cough is not responding to Piriton CS, you have to show him to the Pediatrician who after clinically examining his chest may advise some investigations and prescribe antibiotics for him.
Wishing your son an early recovery.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Cough in children could be because of various causes. The treatment depends on the basic etiology.

Some times cough could be because of bacterial infection. Then antibiotics may be required.

If the cough is associated with wheezing then bronchodilator may be required.

So the treatment depends on the cause of the cough. So a physical examination will help to identify and start treatment for the same.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Welcome to HealthCare Magic
Hope you are doing good. Chlorpheniramine (Piriton) is a first-generation alkylamine antihistamine used in the prevention of the symptoms of allergic conditions such as rhinitis and urticaria. It can help with allergic cough but not with bacterial or Viral cough. for bacterial cough you should use antibiotics and for viral bed rest ,Gargle with hot water etc.
Hope you are satisfied with the answer.

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

Piriton CS is a cough suppressant and it will help to give relief from allergic and dry cough.

If the child is having productive cough with sputum production, he will require a cough syrup with expectorant such as ascoril expectorant.

Cough due to wheezing and bronchospasm will require cough syrup with bronchodilator.

I advise you to consult the pediatrician for examination of the child and for prescription of appropriate cough medication.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
