Could Using Macrobid Develop Into Hives?

Hi, I am a 40 yr. old, female, 5 3 , 120 lbs. I get quite a bit of UTIs. I am allergic to Cipro and was put on Macrobid for 10 days. A week after completing the Macrobid; I developed hives, which have lasted for 2 weeks so far. Anything pressing on my skin will turn into welps. My PCP has told me I can no longer take those antibiotics. I am unclear if he s referring to those 2 particular antibiotics or sulfa antibiotics??? Also, if I develop another infection, is there something else that can be prescribed?

Hi,

Your doctor meant that you cannot take antibiotic to which your allergic which are cipro and Macrobid. Yes, there are many antibiotics which can replace these antibiotics, but for you it is safer to first get a test dose to make sure you are not allergic to the alternatives (like Trimethoprim). You should stay well hydrated and maintain good hygiene levels to reduce chances of UTI attacks.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
