3 Year Old Daughter, Suffering From Cold, Cough, Fever, Burping Frequently. Giving Cough Syrup, Calpol. Further Treatment?

Hello,
My 3 year old daughter has been suffering from cold and a wet cough since 5 days. She had fever in the first 3 days and with calpol the fever subsided. We have been giving her Cherry Cough and Ventorlin along with steam inhalation everyday. Her weight is 12kgs. The running nose is ok now but the cough is still there. She's also having a problem of gas after this episode of cough and keeps on burping frequently. What can be done now?

Hello,

Welcome and thanks for the post,

Your daughter is most likely suffering from acute rhinobronchitis or upper respiratory tract infection which is frequently caused by viral infection but could also be caused by bacterial infection. If she is already on cough syrup and calpol or paracetamol then it is a good start and everything you have been doing so far is good first aid approaches. Normally the viral infection clears off within a couple of days and if there is still persistence of symptoms, then the likelihood of a bacterial infection should be envisaged. I suggest you try seeing a pediatrician who can do a physical examination of your daughter. She might be suffering from acute bronchitis or pneumonia due to bacteria and if this is the case, then she will need a course of antibiotics which have to be prescribed by a doctor.

Hope this helps
