Hi there.

Painful intercourse is pain or discomfort in the genitals during or after sexual intercourse. The pain may be described as a raw sensation or as a burning, itching or stinging feeling. Painful intercourse is medically known as dyspareunia, in medical terms.

The causes of painful intercourse vary widely among individuals. One of the most common is pain or discomfort in the vulva (vulvodynia), which may be due to skin irritation from rashes or household chemicals.
This seems more likely since both you and your partner are suffering from the same symptoms. Also, it could be in response to a lubricating jelly/ other local ointment / spermicidal jelly that is used sporadically. Condom allergy might manifest in this way if you occasionally use condoms or other barrier methods like vaginal diaphragm etc.

Painful intercourse may also occur if you have experienced any damage or injury to any of the external structures of the vulva (the genitals) or to the XXXXXXX sexual organs, such as the vagina, cervix, ovaries or uterus, however it wont cause irritation to both.

Further, recurring infections, such as vaginal yeast infections or sexually transmitted diseases, can be associated with painful intercourse. This is a leading cause for both of the partners to experience discomfort, burning etc.

Sometimes, psychological causes such as depression, stress, frustration, inadequate sex drive or inadequate arousal might lead to it.

Painful intercourse may accompany symptoms related to other body systems including:
Difficult or painful urination, or burning with urination - if there is associated urinary infection
Fever and chills in case of severe infection
Infertility - sometimes pelvic inflammatory disease causes this.
Nerve problems that cause pain, numbness or tingling - part of generalized neural disorders.
Rashes in other areas of the body

Dyspareunia can be treated by making some simple lifestyle changes. Open communication between you and your partner about what might be causing your pain or discomfort can make a world of difference. Quitting bad habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption will only benefit your sexual experience. A healthy diet and regular exercise are also often overlooked, but key factors in an optimal sex life. To rule out genital infections in either of you, please get a physical examination by a gynecologist for yourself, and by an XXXXXXX for your partner. They would rule out local causes of infection, and advise tests for further confirmation.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

I am at my wits end. Since I was about nineteen, turning 40 tomorrow, I have gotten UTI s pretty regularly, every couple months. Biggest issue turned out was urinating after sex and taking an antibiotic pill after sex. About 2 years ago I had a bad bout that lasted 8 months of chronic UTI s, sometimes my culture would be negative, but i would go back the next week and it would show that I had one. I could feel them coming before they would even show in a culture. After 20 years the bacteria became immune to most antibiotics; and instead of being on them for 3-5 days it turned into 7-10 days. I have now had non stop back to back infections since November. Different strains multiple antibiotics, clitoral pains, abdominal pressure and pain, bloating like I m six months pregnant, 25 pound weight gain in two months. No ease of symptoms. Constant Urinary Tract infection for over 6 months, which means constant yeast infection that has now gone toward my rectal area. I ve heard Interstitial Cystitis, Pelvic Inflammatory Disorder, Painful Bladder Syndrome. I had a scope put in my bladder, my urethra stretched. My sonogram shows ovarian cysts and fibroid tumors. I have been to several gyno s and urologists. I m looking foe answers or at least a specialist who has seen people with my symptoms and is well versed in it. I get my period every 2-3 weeks and my blood pressure has gone from110 over about 79-which I ve had my whole life , to stage 2 hypertension. All of this happening in the past 6 months. I have literally been on antibiotics since November, with less then a week in between going back to the dr, and bacteria showing again in my urine. I will travel anywhere, I will do whatever it takes. I live in Carmel NY and have been searching aimlessly for a dr. that has seen other patients, and the most educated in this. I can t deal with this pain and discomfort anymore.

I have a recurring discharge which is itchy and painful, when I visit the doctor, they treat me for PID, why then is it recurring if it is treatable? I could start with the genesis of my problems, I had one ectopic pregnenancy and which was terminated. After around 5 months, I got a miscarriage which when I was going for a wash, my blood could not clot. I spent more than 10 hours beng reinstated. After this incidence, I got a pain on my lower left abdomen which after visiting the doctor was said to be PID. This comes with a discharge which is both painful and itchy. It also burns my partner to a bad extent. It keeps recurring and there is no time it has disappeared completely. This week again I visited the doctor and again some test were done and VDM kit was prescibed. What is this problem and what is its cause? Please reply on YYYY@YYYY
