What Does This Ultrasound Report Indicate?
Recently,I have got the abdomen and pelvis scan of my mother (Age : 59 years) done. Two of the finding is bothering me.
1. Liver is enlarged (size 15.41 cm) with 0.6 cm X 0.72 cm in size cystic lesion seen in the liver.
2. Midline Endometrium is thickened (size 1.32 cm).
She is diabetic where the sugar score varies between 130 - 150 for past few years and also she has a history of smoking bidi.
Please help me with your suggestions on the above two findings.I have attached the ultrasound report as well.
Thanks.
The ultrasound was carried out on a preventive health check-up basis and there was no pain on any sort of discomfort, bleeding etc she had in recent time.
She underwent a major vascular surgery in 2011 and since then she is on medication such as ecosprin 75 etc.She is mild asthmatic as well.
Liver is not a problem but increased endometrium is to be evaluated
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in details.
Please find my observations below.
1. The liver is mildly enlarged with fatty changes. The normal liver in most people measures 14.5 cm. Therefore if it is 15.4 then it is not a serious problem. However you can get liver function tests and see the results.
There is a 0.6 x 0.7 cyst with fluid in the liver. This is too small and not a problem but you can get another ultrasound scan done after 3 to 6 months to know if the cyst is increasing in size. Cysts in liver less than 1.5 cm in size are usually harmless.
2. Endometrium is the inner lining of uterus and it is thickened. This requires detailed evaluation by consulting a gynecologist. It is possible that the endometrium is overactive in case of your mother. However there is a small risk of cancer when we talk of increased endometrial thickness. It is better to get a detailed testing done.
For diabetes monitoring you can get the HbA1c levels checked in blood. This is a more accurate test for blood sugar level monitoring.
Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
I have one more follow up query regarding the findings of Uterus and Kidney.
1. Myometrium is isoecohic (Not sure what exactly it means???)
2. Cortical Cyst of 1.13 cm in lower pole of right kidney.(Hope this is normal???).
Thanks.
Cysts in kidney less than 3.0 cm are normal
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
Good to know that you have approached doctors in your place and they have given recommended suggestion.
1. Myometrium is isoechoic is a technical term used to mean that the wall of uterus is normal.
2. A cortical cyst measuring 1.1 cm is a similar water filled cyst which is there is the liver. A cyst more than 3.0 cm in the kidney should be followed up with caution. This is not a problem and can be reviewed when doing a scan after 3 to 6 months for the liver cyst.
Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
My mother gynaecologist has conducted sonography and here is the outcome.
1. Uterus A/v normal in size - 57.8 ml
2. Myometrium is isoechoic.
3. Endometrium hyperplastic & hyperecohic with multiple hypoechoic area - 11.7 mm
4. Both Ovaries is normal in size and echo texture
Please help me with your conclusion particularly on Point 3, hope point 1,2 and 4 is all normal.
Thanks.
Recommendations are based on patient risk factors
Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir,
Thanks for writing back with an update.
There are recommendations based on your query.
1. A woman who has endometrial thickening and other positive findings on ultrasound, such as increased vascularity, inhomogeneity of endometrium, particulate fluid, or thickened endometrium over 11 mm, should be referred
to a gynaecologist for further investigations.
2. Decisions about further investigations should be made on a case-by-case basis in asymptomatic women with increased endometrial thickening and risk factors for endometrial cancer such as obesity, hypertension, and late menopause.
Therefore the gynaecologist will keep the above in mind and proceed with detailed investigation depending on patient risk factors.
Hope your query is answered.
