default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: During my routine annual check-up in CBC my Platelet count is 149000, MPV is 13.1, PCT is 0.19 and PDW is 19.9.
Does these values are grossly abnormal?
What should I do to improve these values?

Brief Answer:
seems pretty okay

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

These values look quite normal to me. The normal range for platelets count is 150000 to 450000 but 149000 is normal for me.

I don't think anything needs to be done for these.

Hope this helps.
Regards

My query is more for the other 3 parameters (MPV, PCT and PDW). I read on a few Web sights that high MPV and high PDW (and their high-high combination) is riskier and indicates symptoms of heart disease.
Please suggest what lifestyle change or medication can bring these values within normal range.
I have family history of heart disease from paternal side.

Brief Answer:
No I don't think these are greatly abnormal

Detailed Answer:
The normal limits of these parameters vary from lab to lab, usually upper limit for MPV is 12-13 and that of PDW is 17-18. So in you both are only borderline elevated.

The correlation between these and cardiac disease is inconclusive at present, though there are some interesting data.

In your case, as there is family history, I would recommend aspirin 75-150 mg per day which reduces cardiac risk and is an anti-platelet drug as well. But it may not normalise these values even though risk will be reduced. Apart from this maintaining weight in normal range with regular exercises will also bring down risk a lot. Smoking to be avoided completely.
